5 questions with Kyle & Gisela

Who are you? What do you do for a living?

K: Hi, my name is Kyle-Philip Coulson and I'm an architect.

G: Hello, my name is Gisela Coulson, and I'm a UX/UI Designer. (I've hyperlinked it for those of you who've never heard of it). I'm also known as Kyle's wife.

Tell us a bit about how you ended up together?

K: Long story short, Gisela and I met at mutual friends' wedding. We sat at the same table and although we were a little oblivious to each other's existence that night, by the next day the thoughts had started forming and the day after that we had begun chatting non-stop on Instagram. A week later, God told me that she's my wife and I decided to tell her that on our second (SECOND!) date. Fast forward to 5 December 2020, where we got married in Pretoria on our one-year anniversary.

Why did you start Wildfire Decor? And why call it 'Wildfire'?

G: Well, we ended up buying a lot of decor for our own wedding because we realised that it was cheaper to buy some items than it was to rent them. A few months after the wedding, we had friends over for a braai. We were talking about how they had started their own furniture-making business and became an overnight success. The topic of the piles of decor items came up and in a lightning bolt moment, the idea of starting a decor hire business struck and here we are!

We spent about a week brainstorming ideas, and eventually landed on 'Wildfire' because it was the name of our first dance song at the wedding. We love the romance and the energy the name carries.

What are your passions in life?

K: I would say my biggest passion in life is chasing Jesus and knowing His heart. A close second to that is architecture (hence me becoming an architect). I love that I get to do what I'm most passionate about. I'm also a big people person. I love hearing people's stories and spending time with friends in deep conversation. I also love to debate people over Donald Trump. (Are you for him or against him?) My other passions include swimming and cycling (I used to be a triathlete), travel and design.

G: I'll echo Kyle in saying that Jesus is our top priority. Making Him the centre of our life and business is what we both strive to do. I love my dogs - Mila is my miniature schnauzer, Toothless is our black labrador, and Luigi (my sister's dog) is the most adorable italian greyhound. You might see them featured on my Instagram page from time to time. I love my job in that I love solving problems and making complex processes easy to use through good design. I also love travelling abroad, watching good movies, 20th century history, interior design and doing adventurous, adrenalin-pumping things.

What is your advice for couples starting to plan their wedding?

G: I was so lucky to have someone like Kyle who was as invested in every decision about the day as I was, so planning (designing) the wedding together was a way for us to get to know each other even better and strengthen our relationship. I would say that the most important part of planning your wedding is making sure that YOU will enjoy the day. I know a lot of couples get stuck in family politics and find saying 'No' impossible at times. But just remember that whoever you invite as guests will be witnesses to the moments you'll share with your husband/wife, and it's up to you to make sure those moments are created and captured to your liking.

On a more practical note, don't skimp on choosing a great photographer. We went with
Bahama Burgundy and I would recommend her a thousand times over. She was fun, witty and made it easy for me to climb out of my shell for the photos. We were on the fence about getting a videographer for the day, and in the end we are SO happy we did. Bravo & Thatcher captured our day so beautifully. And say yes to THE dress!
